Why is the Crown Chakra Important?
The Crown Chakra, or Sahasrara, is the highest point of human consciousness, the gateway between your physical self and the universe and its energies. Positioned at the very top of the head, rather like skullcap, it concerns your spiritual connection and ability to interact with universal energies, and them with you.
When this Chakra is balanced, you feel at peace, spiritually connected, and in alignment. But when the Sahasrara Chakra is blocked or misaligned, you can feel heavy in the head, stuck in endless “what if” thoughts, and disconnected from joy. Not to mention, you might feel that your prayers are unanswered, or the Universe is dealing you less than your fair share!
What Does the Crown Chakra Control?
The Crown Chakra governs both your spiritual self and your mental clarity:
Spiritual self: This Chakra is your connection between the spirit world and with universal energies. When balanced, it allows you to trust, surrender, and flow with divine guidance rather than being bogged down by worry or heavy earthly matters. You also trust and understand your path and progress more clearly. When the soul finally leaves the body, it leaves through the Crown.
Mental clarity: The Crown dictates how well you feel in your head. If you get too bogged down with thoughts, you can end up with a slow or blocked Crown Chakra. One thought leads to another and before you know it, you get that endless stream of “what if” thoughts that do your head in and hold you back. Instead of trusting universal energies and allowing them to collaborate with you, you start being dragged down to earth. That’s why the balance of this Chakra is absolutely essential.
What Does a Balanced Crown Chakra Feel Like?
When this Chakra is open and flowing, you feel clear-headed, calm, and connected to something greater. When your Crown Chakra is beautifully balanced, you’ll experience:
A deep sense of peace, trust, and clarity
Feeling connected to spirit and the universe.
Living in flow rather than in fear
A calm, quiet mind free from obsessive “what ifs”
Feeling guided rather than burdened
Happiness: experiencing the joys of life fully
Attracting abundance: in love, finance, good energy, and opportunities
Alignment: Knowing you are on the right path and feeling it. A sense of moving forwards in trust and in the right way.
Overactive Crown Chakra Symptoms
If the Crown Chakra gets overloaded and spins too fast, eventually the body cannot ground it properly. You might experience a racing mind, a feeling of being spacey, not really being present and often distracted or ungrounded. Even worse, as time goes on you may progress into overthinking, analysis paralysis, or even escapism into fantasy. You may not even know how you really feel about a situation. One very frequent occurrence is a lack of present-moment awareness, the inability to be truly here and now. Unfortunately, this can also contribute to accidents happening, as well as to thinking ahead of what you want to say rather than listening to what others are actually saying with full presence.
Hyperactivity in this Chakra can also overstimulate the nervous system and the pineal gland, contributing to anxiety or insomnia. One of the worst aspects of an overactive Sahasrara Chakra, is that people can become misled in their spirituality and may use spirituality as an escape instead of growth. An overactive Crown Chakra can also drain energy from the etheric body, leading to physical fatigue and disconnection. This weakens the lower Chakras, leaving less stability in areas like grounding (root chakra), creativity (sacral), and confidence (solar plexus).
Blocked Crown Chakra
When you have a blocked Crown Chakra, or the Chakra is spinning too slow and underactive, the flow of higher guidance feels muted. It can feel like you are on your own in the world, just dealing with earthly matters and that there is nothing else. You may notice dullness and a sense of simply going through the motions of life, indecision, rigid or closed-minded thinking, and a sense of isolation or disconnection from life’s meaning. Emotional lows can surface (apathy, depression), alongside mental fog, analysis paralysis, or cynicism about anything “spiritual.” Physically, some people report lethargy, sleep disturbances (too little or too much), headaches, and general exhaustion, as if the system can’t “light up.”
Day to day, a blocked or underactive Crown Chakra can manifest as being overly attached to material things, stuck in routines, and unable to access intuition or a bigger perspective. In energy terms, a sluggish Crown stops prana from circulating upward, which can leave you feeling cut off from purpose and uncoordinated with your body and surroundings.
🌀 Blockages I See in the Crown Chakra
These are the kinds of blockages I sometimes see sitting at the Crown Chakra:
Blue blockages (Throat Chakra) → cogitation about a communication you can’t have with a certain person; something you cannot say or was left unsaid.
Yellow blockages (Solar Plexus Chakra) → often quite big, reflecting doubts about the self, lack of confidence, and difficulty moving forwards, or the inability to explain how you really feel inside about a situation.
Orange blockages (Sacral Chakra) → linked to work, a colleague or colleagues, friends, or the outer circle of acquaintances causing issues for you.
Red blockages (Root Chakra) → connected to stress around home, a family member, or even your own health.
In a Reiki session, I remove these blockages one by one and then channel pure Reiki energy in. Interestingly, Reiki energy is often perceived as being remarkably similar in colour to the Crown Chakra’s violet-white energy. Once that’s done, I realign the Sahasrara Chakra energy flow so that the tunnel of light is properly vertical and can connect with the universal energies as it should.
The Crown Chakra and the Brain
Physically, the Crown Chakra is linked to the cerebral cortex and central nervous system. It influences:
Higher brain functions → consciousness, awareness, imagination, and higher thought.
The pineal gland → sometimes called the seat of the soul. It regulates sleep-wake cycles with melatonin, but it’s also linked to mystical experiences and spiritual awakening.
The pituitary gland → the master gland that governs the entire endocrine system. In Crown Chakra work, it represents the unification of the physical body with higher consciousness.
The Crown Chakra Connection
When I work with clients (and I feel truly blessed, because they are all genuinely lovely people, with some level of spiritual belief) I often notice how the Crown tells a story about their state of connection and has a direct link with what is going on in their life at that time.
Sometimes it shines bright, open, and flowing. Other times, I see that it’s clogged with too many thoughts, too much worry, and that’s when people feel disconnected, “heavy in the head,” or spiritually flat.
In energy healing, working gently with the Sahasrara Chakra helps clients reconnect to the universal energies that are always present. It’s a reminder that we don’t have to carry everything ourselves; we can allow our guides and higher vibrations to support us.
What Does Reiki Do for The Crown Chakra
During a Reiki session, the Crown Chakra energy often appears to me like a tunnel of violet light rising straight up. It’s usually the width of the top of the head or spreading out slightly wider, like a funnel. Not everyone has the same size Crown Chakra, so naturally the flow of energy will vary but what matters is that it is aligned so it goes directly upwards and is able to merge with universal energy.
When the Crown is in alignment like this, you feel that sense of peace, contentment, and deep connection. That’s when the universal energies start working with you, and believe me, that is no coincidence whatsoever.
How to Balance Your Crown Chakra at Home
Meditation → Sit quietly, focus on the top of your head, and imagine a violet or white light streaming upward, connecting you to the universe.
Affirmations → Repeat phrases like “I am trust in the universal energies” or “I work with universal energies as they work with me.”
Crystals → Amethyst is a perfect companion for Crown Chakra healing. Place one near you when you sleep.
Essential oils → Frankincense, myrrh, or lotus oil can be diffused to enhance spiritual focus.
Reiki → You can also come and have a Reiki session with me, where I will help clear blockages and realign the Crown channel.
The Crown Chakra and The Soul Journey
The Crown Chakra is both the beginning and the end of the soul’s journey. It’s the channel of divine energy flowing into us, and, in my experience, it’s also the gateway through which the soul leaves at the end of life.
Keeping this Chakra balanced means more than just spiritual connection, it means protecting your mental wellbeing, finding calm in your head, and allowing yourself to be lifted up rather than dragged down.
When you nurture your Crown Chakra, you open yourself to the wisdom of the universe, and that light of joy can shine through every part of your being.
