Banish Throat Chakra Imbalances: Speak, Listen, and Express with Clarity

The throat chakra (Vishuddha) is the bridge between your heart and your mind. It governs self-expression, communication, and truth—both in how we share our thoughts and how we truly listen to others. When this chakra is balanced, we feel confident in speaking our truth, free from fear of judgment, yet mindful of kindness. When blocked or overactive, we may either struggle to express ourselves or speak without considering the impact of our words.

If you've ever felt unheard, misunderstood, or unable to express your innermost feelings and what’s truly in your heart, then your throat chakra might need sorting out. Here are 12 powerful tips to balance your throat chakra and unlock the power of clear and confident communication.

What Does the Throat Chakra Control Physically?

The throat chakra is deeply connected to communication and expression, but it also physically influences several key areas of the body, including:

  • Throat & Mouth – Speaking, swallowing, and oral health.

  • Vocal Cords & Larynx – The ability to project and use your voice confidently.

  • Ears & Hearing – The ability to truly listen and process information.

  • Sinuses & Nasal Passages – Congestion or chronic sinus issues can indicate an imbalance.

  • Thyroid Gland – Regulates metabolism, energy, and hormone balance.

When the throat chakra is in balance, these systems function smoothly, supporting clear communication and physical well-being. However, a throat chakra imbalance can lead to various emotional and physical challenges.

Slow vs. Fast-Spinning Throat Chakra

🔵 A Slow-Spinning (Blocked) Throat Chakra

When the throat chakra is underactive or blocked, energy does not flow freely, leading to:

  • Emotional Symptoms-Expressing: Difficulty or refusal to express innermost feelings (common when trying to protect other people from worrying or flying off the handle, but creates more problems than it’s worth later, for the person that feels they cannot speak out). Fear of speaking up, social anxiety, feeling unheard or invisible, dishonesty, secrets, or excessive shyness.

  • Emotional Symptoms-Listening:  A person struggling or refusing to listen, especially to things they need to hear but don’t want to face. This could be due to emotional avoidance, fear of confrontation, or self-protection (e.g., not wanting to upset others or themselves). The act of blocking out information leads to energy stagnation, creating resistance and eventual emotional or physical blockages.

  • Physical Symptoms (any of the following or combinations): Chronic sore throat, frequent sinus infections, laryngitis, thyroid imbalances (hypothyroidism), ear problems, and difficulty swallowing. Sinus congestion and infections are common, as suppressed emotions and unspoken truths can cause stagnation in the throat and upper respiratory system. Hearing issues such as muffled hearing or recurring ear infections may arise when someone resists hearing or accepting deeper truths, whether internal or external. Snoring is also associated with a blocked throat chakra. Especially loud snoring!

🔥 A Fast-Spinning (Overactive) Throat Chakra

An overactive throat chakra can cause excessive energy flow, leading to:

  • Emotional Symptoms: Talking excessively without listening to others, cutting in, dominating conversations, gossiping, being overly critical or blunt, and struggling with truth versus exaggeration, arrogance. Many of these aspects are also due to problems with self (solar plexus chakra) and thus often people with a fast spinning throat chakra also have ego issues too.

  • Physical Symptoms: Tension in the jaw and neck, teeth grinding (bruxism), migraines, hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), and speech difficulties. Tinnitus, ringing in the ears, and sound sensitivity may occur when there is too much energetic stimulation, making it difficult to process incoming messages. Some cases of temporary hearing loss can reflect an inability to listen deeply or a subconscious attempt to block out unwanted messages.

Note that a throat chakra can also be blocked AND spinning too fast. I have to say I have seen this particilar throat chakra imbalance much more in men. A person with those symptoms might alternate between these states, feeling unable to express themselves at times (underactive) and then overcompensating by speaking excessively or inappropriately at other times (overactive). To dare to speak out or to enjoy their expression, they also may use alcohol or other substances to be able to bring about this temporary release of being able to express themselves.

In women who manifest a fast spinning throat chakra with blockages, there is often a sadness. An inability to express their sentiments, their true feelings, but who still carry on being bright and talking about the weather and practical matters in their every day lives. This can be extremely tiring and they can feel at odds with their inner feelings and the secrets they hold within.

Balancing the throat chakra is about finding harmony between expression and silence, truth and compassion, speaking and listening. When energy flows freely, both communication and inner awareness become clearer, allowing for authentic expression and deeper spiritual connection.

12 Tips to Balance Your Throat Chakra

1. Speak Clearly and with Intention

Instead of asking, “Can you…?”, shift to “I would like you to…”, and always end with “Thank you.” This small change moves your words from uncertainty to confidence and clarity. When you express yourself with certainty, you send a message to the universe that you value your voice.

2. Express Feelings Without Justification

A simple but powerful shift: Instead of explaining what has happened to you to make you feel the way you do, try just expressing the pure emotion you feel. Very often we start with "You did such and such, it makes me feel so angry!" Instead just say, “I feel angry.” In 9 out of 10 cases, the person you are saying this to will ask why. This opens up a space for honest communication without any need for accusation, defensiveness or over-explanation.

3. Truly Listen Without Preparing Your Response

Often, we mentally rehearse what to say next instead of fully listening to what is being said. This is an ego thing, where our need to speak is stronger than our need to listen. How bad is that?? Try pausing your inner dialogue when someone speaks to you. Listening is not just about hearing words—it’s about being fully present in the conversation.

4. Be Fully Present When Listening

Listening is not just about using your ears. Watch facial expressions, body language, and energy shifts. Feel the conversation not just in your mind but in your heart and gut, too. Communication is an exchange of energy, not just words. You can also do this via video or audio calls. Just listen carefully, absorb and feel!

5. Find a Way to Speak Your Truth

Honesty doesn't have to be harsh. There is always a kind way to be truthful. Starting an important conversation by acknowledging something positive about the person concerned before speaking your truth can make all the difference too. A balanced throat chakra helps you express yourself clearly, firmly, and with compassion. Suppressing your truth creates blockages, while expressing it with care keeps energy flowing freely.

6. Embrace the Power of Silence

Not everything requires an immediate response. Give yourself time to absorb and process. Don't be afraid of silence! If you're unsure how to answer, say “I’m thinking about it.” This simple phrase gives you space while showing respect for the conversation. Not so long ago, silences when in company were much more common. Now, due to the fast pace and non-stop chatter of our TVs and particularly of social media, we now find silences awkward. How sad is that?

7. Shift Away from Complaints

Notice how often you use complaints as conversation starters. Instead of “I’m so tired of…”, reframe it into “I’m looking forward to…”. Your words shape your reality—train your throat chakra to radiate positivity and possibility.

8. Plan Important Conversations

Rushed conversations often lead to misunderstandings. If something is truly important, schedule time for it and write down your key points beforehand. Writing itself is a powerful form of communication and can help you clarify your thoughts.

9. Listen to Violins and String Instruments

String instruments like the violin resonate with the frequency of the throat chakra, helping to clear blockages. Their vibrations stimulate openness and emotional expression, making them an excellent choice for throat chakra healing.

10. Sing Your Way to Balance

The throat chakra is vibrational, and singing directly activates it. The note G resonates with its energy—humming or singing this note can help clear stagnation and encourage confident self-expression.

11. Nourish Your Throat Chakra with Fruits

Vitamin C-rich fruits like oranges, kiwis, and berries support throat health and immunity. Just as we reach for citrus when we feel a sore throat coming on, regularly nourishing yourself with these foods can help maintain balance.

12. Listen to Throat Chakra Healing Frequencies

Sound healing at 741 Hz is known to cleanse and strengthen the throat chakra. Listening to these frequencies can help you release communication blockages and enhance verbal clarity.

Final Thoughts: Honor Your Voice

Your words carry energy. When your throat chakra is balanced, you express yourself freely and with purpose—neither holding back in fear nor speaking carelessly.

Take a moment today to reflect: Is your voice aligned with your truth? If not, embrace these simple practices to create harmony within. The world needs your voice—make sure it shines!
